How To Make A Good Impression When You Are Changing Jobs

Hiring managers are almost always so concerned about the gap on the resume of job applicants. A lot of people also miss the chance to be hired because of this. If you are currently unemployed and you know that it was your decision to be in this situation, then you should be ready to do some explaining if you are to try to get an interview for another job.

Now the question is how you’re going to explain your recent resignation without leaving a negative impression to recruiters?

1. Emphasize the Positive and Limit the Negative.
No matter what your reason for changing jobs is, it is important that you try to make the decision of yours a positive one. As most employers understand that employees these days are vulnerable to burnout, you can use this to explain why you decided to be out of work. Say that although you enjoyed your job, you needed to take time to rejuvenate both mentally and physically.

2. Make It a More Personal One.
If your decision to quit your job came due to the need for you to take care of your loved ones, then say it. Emergency cases like this should not be taken against any worker like you, and employers know that. However, it is equally important that you give the hiring manager some sort of insurance that everything is fine already and that you are physically and mentally ready to work once again.

3. Talk about Your Receiving of Consultation.
If you have indeed received some career consulting while you were out of work, there is no way you should not mention this to the hiring manager. You could say that you wanted to talk to a career expert just to be able to focus on what’s important in your career.

4. Time to Volunteer.
If you were wise enough to do some volunteer work while you were out of work, you definitely did yourself a lot of favor. Companies appreciate employees who are willing to offer their services without anything in return. What’s even more amazing about joining volunteer activities and groups is that it allows you to think whether or not you should consider changing careers as well. As you can imagine, you will be meeting a lot of people in such events, and this could help you open your eyes to reality. So if you are applying for a job in a different industry, you can explain how your volunteering made you realize what you are really passionate about in life.
